Singularity News CCG

A satirical card game on the eve of the technological singularity.

Pairing

Every move pairs two cards. A pair is valid only if the values fit one of these rules:

Positive + positive of opposite parity (odd + even): sum
Negative + negative of the same parity: sum of absolute values
Zero + any non-zero: absolute sum × 3
Inverse values (e.g. 7 and −7): value × 4

City map

11 districts: Q Q 4 Q 4 Q 7 before the singularity, Q 4 Q 7 after it (red zone). Q = quest duel, 4 / 7 = table for 4 or 7 players.
Win a district to unlock the next one and add new characters (3 in a quest, 4 at a table) to your collection.
After every game an unemployed collected card may be laid off permanently (2 × district number %). Permanently unemployed characters start every pre-singularity game unemployed (−2).
Open Cards to browse your collection and let Mr. Slop interview any character – their answers depend on their job, layoffs and post-singularity group.
The last district ends the story with an article written from your characters.

Quest duel

Click one of your cards (near side), then one of the opponent’s cards (far side). Keep pairing until nothing fits, then draw up to 4; the opponent draws 2. When it holds 4 cards it takes revenge: it pairs against your hand and scores the absolute sum of what is left. When its deck is empty, the higher number wins. The opponent is a Big Tech CEO (burned resources) before the singularity and an AGI after it.

Table for 4

4 cards each. The starter plays exactly one card; going round, each player must play a card that pairs with the card on top and may continue as long as every card pairs with the one just placed. Every pair adds to the pot.
The first player who cannot play ends the chain: the one who played last takes the pot and leads next.
An unemployed card in a pair reverses the order of play with 5% chance (10% with two).

Table for 7 (Bunker Market, Last Newsroom)

Everyone starts with $144M and the name ---, then gets a face-up boss card: its name becomes yours.
When the turn moves on from you, you pay as much as the burn pile grew during your turn. The AGI burns the pile.
If you cannot (or do not) pair with the calling card, you pay 7× its value (at least $7M).
You may play your boss card, but it costs half your money and you get a new boss.
Out of chips = out of the game; your boss stays at your seat, inverted. The deck is reshuffled when it runs out. Last one standing wins. Your boss at the end of the Last Newsroom becomes your boss in the final story.

Singularity meter (0–12)

+1 every round, +1 for each Robot or Tech card in a pair, −1 for each Conspiracy card.
At 3, 6 and 9 the news gets scarier and layoffs hit: a share of the human cards becomes unemployed (value −2). Robots are safe.

The Singularity

All cards are shuffled back into the deck and dealt again.
Robots ascend to 0; humans become Echoes with their sign flipped. Unemployment ends.
Every human becomes a rebel, a survivor (value 3 better: +3 / −3) or a zombie (value 1 worse, fully under AI control).
Pairing rules stay, but pairs convert: a zombie on a rebel makes a zombie, a rebel on a survivor recruits a rebel, a rebel on a robot reprograms it to a random value.
All scores ×2; quest and 4-player revenue is halved once; you get 7 seconds per move.

42

42 is the answer to everything: landing on exactly $42M wins instantly (not at the 7-player tables).

Chips and Auto

Money is shown as poker chips: white $1M, red $5M, green $25M, black $100M, purple $500M. Auto lets the machine play your moves; switch it off any time. Tap Mr. Slop’s face to fold the news away.

The world of Singularity News

The game is set in the world of the satirical Singularity News series on DEV, anchored by Mr. Slop:

The ending

Win the last district and you run a news source of the new civilization; lose, and Mr. Slop carries the samizdat as a survivor. The article is written by an open-weight model – Gemma 4 by default, or gpt-oss-120b (switch with the AI button on the map) – from your characters, their interviews and groups, and can be saved as Markdown.
